Symbol Of Rap
By Coco
I just want to innovate and stimulate minds,
Travel the world and penetrate the times,
Escape through rhythms,
In search of peace and wisdom

A few months ago I had interviewed a Hip hop artist called Kans at YFM for a mixtape he was about to release (see article titled 'al jy het is 'n Kans')
Over the years hip hop in South Africa has gone beyond being a platform for self expression. Previously its main purpose was voice out issues the youth were going through in a category 'underground' it became a new found gospel that liberated people.
In a country that is young in its democracy, there are those who have remodelled and shaped the future of the South African youth through Hip Hop. With over 11 thousand downloads of a mixtape, in just two weeks, Kans has ushered a new era of music for the country with a follow up tape titled 'Symbol of Rap EP'. Which has a new sound with features from various artist and producers who have contributed to the album. The tape begins with a song titled 'The plug' that speaks of a predetermined success and how he represented Rustenburg,. Furthermore he speaks of how he is a connected plug [very poetic] and how people are trying to turn off that plug.
The tape starts of with a laid back trap sound and gradually shifts to a hyped up vibe and then returns back the chilled vibe it began with. I believe the aim of those shifts were to test our emotions of how we would like to really express ourselves yet contain that need to express. With regards to the lyrical content he explained in a recent interview is meant to be relevant to the listeners and lightened the mood using connotations of actual and figurative meanings of the topic of the song.
I believe this is meant to stimulate the minds of the listeners to sit back and listen to a particular song yet each song is symbolic to what he real feels.
This time around Kans' is on a tour called the 'Symbol of Rap Experience Tour' that is intended to provide you with a greater understanding of the EP.

GO HAM
STIMULATE YOUR MIND
He ends the tape with 'Alrighty' where in the production (beat) begins
with an aggressive bass and a touch of confidence in his voice, which sums
up his statement made in the beginning of the tape.
"MY POSITION IS FOREVER SOLIDIFIED"
It is never easy to explain your vision of the future. Kans is slowly but surely nurturing a different sound by artists from Rustenburg and I hope it is a future you are able to envision.
