ART MY JOZI
By Coco
The quality of the future of a country is seen in its people.
Greetings Information Age Contributors,
Since the corporate flight of the beginning of the 21st century, Johannesburg has been in need of major re-imaging and recreation.I had feared the possibility of an artistically deprived existence in our country. This came about one day when I realised how (to a greater extent) our generation treats art (in all its disciplines)...Fortunately the universe had already handled that part, in physical form of course.
Art My Jozi is the process the universe was, is and about to undergo, in it the JDA (Johannesburg Development Agency) and Trinity Sessions have devoted themselves in infrastructural development of the city of Johannesburg, yet preserve the art and culture of the existing communities.
During our trip through Jozi down 'Louis Botha's corridor', I was able to witness the growth and 'way forward' for Jozi from Norwood - past Brixton and all the way to Noordgesig. Though in most cases when city's develop, its significance or its beauty losses value when the culture of it is lost. On our trip to Norwood the seemingly mundane and 'nothing-important' things that we see actually make the up the places we live within, in this instance its the grafiti on walls - the old buildings, the community's that create the wholesome existence we call a 'hometown'. JDA and Trinity Session showed us the major developments and restorations and incorpotions of infrastructure design and cultral protection (so to speak) including property, art commissions and cultural preservation that create the grand design of Johannesburg - all kept in tact.
Included in all of this is the Rea vaya bus stops that we ignorantly walk or drive past. The development of the city creates hope for a synergistic and hopefully thriving-future-generation that in years to come (I believe) will become a sort of African 'Shen-Zhen', however Rome was not built in one day.
For those of us that live in the South-Western-Townships of Johannesburg, the development has long begun having created a meaningful impact in the township, for example in Noordgesig it has created jobs, a 'facial uplift' to the neighbourhood, and an all inclusive programme of transformation.

You probably noticed it.

'I wonder what the future looks like'
Such a change restores the dignity and sense of pride we have in our community. The thing we need most in South Africa is to create a self sustaining society, because at this point in time we need to evolve - beyond racial discrimination, status, gender inequality and ultimately psychological backlock.
